| | San
Vito Lo Capo small town originally with an agricultural and sea economy, today
it is known as one of the most important sea places of Sicily for the beauty of
its coast and the wonderfully clean water of its sea. It was born at the end of
the 18th century in the area of the public dominion of Erice, at the feet of Mount
Monaco, in a bay of white sand between the two capes of Capo S. Vito and Punta
Solanto, near the ancient sanctuary of S. Vito. | You
may reach it driving through the areas of "Timpone" and "Piana
di Sopra", on the peak of which you can see, right on the bay of Macari,
a 16th century tower, and where the chapel of St. Crescenza, ancient cult place
belonging to the XII century, stands out isolated,. The Sanctuary, fortified and
endowed with lodgings for the pilgrims in the 1545, rose in 1200 together with
the ancient thun-fishing structure, just opposite the city of Monte S. Giuliano
(todays Erice). | Along the steep side
of Piana di Sopra's and on the oriental part of M. Monaco, there are some coves
in which important evidences of prehistoric human settlements have been found.
Particularly interesting is the Cove of the Racchio, because of engravings representing
deers and other linear gravings; and the Cove of cala Mancina, because of an anthropomorhic
figure's graving. On the road, which goes from the town to the sea on the flank
of Mount Monaco among landscapes of great suggestion and beauty, after "Tannure"
cape, you will reach the tower of the Impiso, of the XVI century, very near the
"Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro" (natural reserve), which seems to stand
there just to be the guardian of the reserve itself. | | |
